Susan
Marie Nath graduated from the Lillian Kaufmann School of Nursing at the
Montefiore Hospital in June, 1976. She worked in the Intensive Care Unit at
Montefiore before attending the University Health Center of Pittsburgh School of
Anesthesia for Nurses (currently the University of Pittsburgh School of
Nursing’s Nurse Anesthesia Program). Susan graduated in 1979 and became a
Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA).
Her
career as a member of the anesthesia care team at Presbyterian University
Hospital expanded throughout several UPMC hospitals for the past 20 years. She
graduated from California University of Pennsylvania and served as a clinical
instructor for UPMC nurse anesthesia.
Susan’s
commitment to counseling colleagues faced with professional challenges will
always be remembered and respected by all that knew her. She married Gary
Bywaters on September 19, 1998 and passed away suddenly on November 28, 1998.
Her family and friends are proud to establish the Susan Nath Bywaters Nurse
Anesthesia Fund at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing in her memory.
The purpose of this
endowment will be to provide an educational resource fund for students enrolled
in the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing, Nurse Anesthesia Program.
The selection of
qualified candidates shall be administered by the Program Director of the Nurse
Anesthesia Program with approval from the Dean using the following criteria:
The qualified student must be enrolled and in good standing in the Nurse Anesthesia Program at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing.
The qualified student should, through his/her life, leadership, and academic endeavors, mirror the life of Susan Nath Bywaters and her quest for new beginnings by exhibiting courage, perseverance, and tenacity.
The first award was presented on December 11, 1999 in a special ceremony at the Westin William Penn Hotel preceding the graduation dinner for the Class of 1999 and has become a part of the graduation dinner program since that time.

This fund was established through the dedication and perseverance of Brent Sommer, CRNA (UHCP '80, Pitt '81) and Deborah Avnet, CRNA (UHCP '79) and the Nurse Anesthesia Program is forever grateful for their efforts.

The
Susan Nath Bywaters Nurse Anesthesia Fund will seek to assist nurse anesthesia
students with their education. Currently, the average debt incurred per student
following completion of the program is over $60,000. Students selected to receive the
monies will exemplify Susan’s commitment to her profession and her colleagues.
You
may fulfill your tax-deductible pledge over a multi-year period. In addition to
gifts of cash, special arrangements can be made for gifts of stock, securities,
or corporate matching gifts.
