International Volunteer Anesthesia Activities
The University of Pittsburgh Nurse Anesthesia Program has been involved with several major Community Initiatives over the last few years. These projects were designed and implemented by Sandra Sell, CRNA, MSN.
Many of these projects involve transporting our simulator and OR equipment to a school and creating a mock OR on-site to portray the role and responsibilities of Nurse Anesthetists by enacting an OR scenario that includes the administration of an anesthetic. Several "hands-on" stations were also provided to enable students to experience some of the techniques and equipment used in the anesthesia environment. These included several airway and intubation stations, regional anesthesia, blood pressure, EKG and pulse oximeter monitoring, hand-washing/germ station, and defibrillation. When visiting schools, presentations were provided to numerous classes and levels of students to explain the role of Nurse Anesthetists and the process of anesthesia.
