Basic Applied Statistics 200
Feedback on Extra Credit Assignments

Did you do any extra credit work? If not, why not? If so, what (if anything) did you learn? (Responses are from Fall 2000.)

  • Yes, I learned more practical uses as opposed to just problems.
  • Yes, I did some extra credit (not too much though). I learned that I can,t use side by side boxplots to show a relationship between students' weight and how many books they read. (Scatterplot is needed to do this.)
  • Yes, I did extra credit. I learned MINITAB can save you a lot of time but is tricky as well.
  • Yes, I learned how to apply the class information better.
  • Yes, I did it. I got a better grasp on how to use MINITAB and understand the output. Also, I worked more with the assistant and fellow classmates. It helped me learn how to know when I needed help deciding what output to use and where to see relationships.
  • No, not enough time---heavy schedule. Barely had time to do homework problems. I'm not good at any math, so anything I learn concerning math teaches me something.
  • I did do extra credit and it was a helpful way to review early material. I was able to brush up on the charts and a few basic equations.
  • No. Main reason: I procrastinated, then I got too busy to do it at the last second. (I learned a lesson from this.)
  • Yes I did extra credit. It helped me get acquainted better with MINITAB and was a good review for the final exam.
  • Yes, I did extra credit. I learned how to do MINITAB better.
  • I did extra credit. It just helped me to review.
  • Yes I learned how to used MINITAB for problems we hadn't used it for before.
  • Yes, I did a few extra credit problems. I learned how to set up my own experiment. Rather than just doing the problems the book sets up for you.
  • I did some extra credit problems and learned absolutely nothing. If fact, MINITAB did not help me at all in this course. It actually hurt me as far as the homework grade was concerned.
  • Yes, I did the extra credit. I learned more about MINITAB and became more comfortable with it. I was glad you had so many extra credit points available!
  • I did extra credit. It helped me practice figuring out what test to use and I learned that my height is only average for my age and my weight is low considering my height.
  • Did extra credit, helped by extra practice with MINITAB.
  • I did 10 extra credit problems, in an attempt to earn up to 50 points of extra credit. I did them because, in my opinion, it would have been foolish to NOT take advantage of the opportunity to earn extra points. By doing the extra credit, I gained a much more concrete understanding of the formulas and the basic differences between which test to use and why. I think doing the extra credit was instrumental in helping me grasp the concepts and better prepare for the final.
  • I didn't do extra credit. I forgot about it.
  • Extra Credit was a good study aid. I used it to learn some of MINITAB problems and also used it as a good study aid for the Final Exam. Thank you!
  • Yes, I did. It helped me recall material from beginning of semester and helped me learn better the end of semester material.
  • No, because I completely forgot that we had them until it was too late and they were already due. I wish I would have though.
  • I did not take advantage of any extra credit because I was too busy in my other classes.
  • No, because I really didn't get a chance and when I wanted to do it, I figured that you wouldn't be too happy getting all those extra credit problems the day before the deadline. I learned basic statistical things but the more complicated stuff really didn't sink in. Hopefully next semester. :)
  • Yes I did the extra credit. I got a better understnading of MINITAB because of it.
  • Yes. I did do extra credit problems. They were a good review of the material. I learned that much care and attention must be given to statistics as not to influence the data before doing the test.
  • No extra credit. It was basically on MINITAB and that was a weakness of mine. I never really learned it well from the homeworks.
  • Yes, I completed 8 of the problems---but didn't even receive half of the points! I learned that I should have started them earlier and they did help practice for exam.
  • I tried to do all the extra credits. It helped me go over the whole course. Sort of like a review.
  • Yes I did the extra credit. It helped me to tie together all the information we learned this semester.
  • I did extra credit, because I wanted to help my grade. It would be silly not to. The extra credit helped me with the first two pages of this exam.
  • No, I didn't do extra credit. I forgot about it.
  • I did extra credit problems and they helped me to learn how to use MINITAB much better.
  • I did not do the extra credit because I forgot about it until the last minute and when I remembered there wasn't enough time, but I wish I would have done it.
  • I did several extra credit problems, and I gained further practice using MINITAB to perform statistical procedures. Generally, I learned how to DECIDE WHICH TEST to use to test hypotheses, which is as valuable to me as the output! Thank you, Prof. Pfenning, for an excellent semester. I learned a lot that I will use in my studies!
  • Didn't do extra credit, I wanted to but I kept putting it off and then the deadline came and I couldn't do ti then. I really should have because that could be the difference between a B and a C.
  • No, I didn't complete any extra credit because I knew that I would pass, but I thought it wouldn't significantly raise my grade a whole letter.
  • Yes I learned how to apply what I learned besides doing homework.
  • Yes, I did 10 of the 15 Extra Credit problems. I learned that I should have done them earlier in the semester when we were learning how to calculate the answers. If I had done that I think it would have helped me more because then I would have been applying what I learned to a real situation. I also realized I had forgotten a lot of commands in MINITAB.
  • Yes, I did a few extra credit problems. It provided a good mini-review for the exam.
  • I did not do any extra credit. I meant to but just didn't get around to it.
  • No, I didn't do any extra credit. Why---because I ran out of time at the end of the semester, I would have liked to do them but I had too many things due, I should have started them earlier.
  • I didn't do the Extra Credit because I adhor [sic] all statistics, no matter the context or use. (Come on, I can't answer honestly my name is on the next page :) ) Maybe I didn't have time.
  • No, I didn't have enough time this semester.
  • No I didn't do extra credit problems. I didn't because I kept putting them off until it was too late and I could no longer do it. I would have liked to do it, but I didn't have the time.
  • I did do extra credit. From it I got a very good review of the concepts through the course, it was good preparation for the final. And it made it clearer how you could use statistics in the real world and not just in a Stat book.
  • Yes, I did do extra credit. I learned a lot about where my weaknesses were and how I make careless mistakes.
  • Did not do extra credit due to lack of time (pledging, work, other classes, etc.) Learned aobut pop. predictions though.
  • Yes I did extra credit problems.
  • Yes I did extra credit. It gave good practice of which tests to use.
  • Yes, I did some of the extra credit. It helped to do them as we were doing that section in class.
  • No extra credit, don't know why.
  • Yes, I learned that through the use of sampling we can find out how one variable affects another, i.e. height and shoe size.
  • I did the extra credit. It served as good practice at putting the things I learned to good use. It also helped me review the material one more time which probably helped exam and quiz grades.
  • I attempted all 15 of the extra credit problems. I felt that they were extremely helpful in giving me more practice solving the problems and helped me better understand what I was testing or looking for. It was more fun because the information that was tested was from our own class. That was an excellent source for extra credit and I would definitely use that in future classes.
  • I did not do the extra credit. I'm a senior with 17 credits, I work 30+ hours a week. I think it's a great idea but I had no time!
  • I did do extra credit. I learned how to use MINITAB, how interesting statistical info can be, the relationship between things etc. I had fun doing it.
  • No extra credit---because I barely had enough time to get some sleep.
  • I didn't do extra credit because I think I have a secure B average, and the extra points wouldn't affect my letter grade.
  • I didn't do any extra credit because I didn't want to waste my time with MINITAB. I don't think it is very helpful and I don't really learn anything from it.
  • I started extra credit but did not finish it because I ran out of time and motivation, but I'm sure after seeing my grade for the class, my motivation would return in full force.
  • I did not do any of the extra credit work, mostly because I didn't remember until last week.
  • No, didn't do extra credit but think it is a good option for students. I personally didn't do extra credit because I didn't feel it was necessary.
  • Yes I did extra credit, but not as much as I would have liked to have done! I think the extra credit allowed us to think about doing stats outside of the classroom with info and numbers that apply to us.
  • Didn't do extra credit. Didn't have time.
  • Yes, I did the extra credit. I learned that you have to be sure you're comparing the right info---I used weight and exercise, but a better way to get my point across would have been to get data on exercise and % body fat.
  • No , I didn't do any extra credit because I had a very busy semester and was having enough trouble keeping up with my mandatory homework assignments. I wish I would have had more time though.
  • No, I did not do any extra credit. BUT I should have.
  • No, I did not do the extra credit because I did not have time to.
  • No I didn't do any of the extra credit. I wanted to but with 16 credits I did not have the time to do it.
  • YES! I learned a little more about statistics. It made me think and understand why each equation should be used and why for each situation.
  • I didn't do the extra credit for lack of time (I sing in the Heinz Chapel Choir). I actually wanted to, even though my grades were solid, because I thought it would be interesting. Oh well. I might actually do some on my own sometime.
  • I didn't do extra credit because I didn't think it would increase my chance of getting an A until I saw my score on the second exam. By that point it was too late in the semester for extra work. I think if you had the TA's mention which bonus is relevant to what is being worked on at the time, more people would hand them in.
  • I did do the Extra Credit assignments. By doing these assignments, I gained a better understanding of how to design problems and how to determine what type of test should be used by looking at the variables used.
  • Yes I did do the extra credit. I learned to read the directions more thoroughly. If I would have given a purpose and a conclusion I would have received more points. I knew what I was doing. I jsut didn't state it.
  • I didn't do extra credit because I felt confident enough with my quizzes, homeworks, and test scores that I wouldn't have to. Hopefully my grade on this test proves that to be true.
  • I did not do any extra credit because I didn't have a lot of extra time this semester and I felt satisfied with my grade.
  • Yes, I did extra credit. I learned how to compare sets of data and make conclusions based on evidence or lack thereof.
  • I didn't do any of the extra credit simply because I didn't have time to with all the work I have been trying to balance this semester but I really wanted and needed too. Good class, thanks for all your help this semester!
  • Yes I did extra credit. I think it helped to apply real things that related to the class to statistics and in using MINITAB.
  • No I did not do extra credit, because I hoped I would do OK without it and because I was pressed for time by the time I thought I might need it. : )
  • Yes, I did extra credit. It helped me to learn how to use MINITAB better.
  • I didn't do any extra credit because I felt that I was doing well enough in the class that I didn't need to get extra points somewhere else.
  • Extra credit: yes, all of it, learned to re...[ran out of time]
  • I did the extra credit. I learned how to make my mistakes with the extra credit and not on the exam.
  • No, I didn't do the extra credit because I forgot.
