Summer Research Program

Feedback from one of the 2006 Summer students:

Dear Joan,
Thank you for giving me a wonderful opportunity as a summer undergraduate intern at the Musculoskeletal Research Center. This experience has helped me develop the necessary tools to continue in research in biomedical engineering. I enjoyed all the events that PTEI offered me: the scheduled lectures were quite informative, and the tour of the artificial heart program and the surgical observation were inspiring. Additionally, working at the Musculoskeletal Research Center was an amazing experience. I had an excellent mentor, Dr. Rui Liang, who both challenged me to the limit, and provided me with the utmost support. I am grateful to my faculty advisor, Dr. Savio L-Y. Woo, for welcoming me into the MSRC and showing me what great research and a good sense of humor is all about. I found the MSRC to be an amazing place with both MDs and PhDs collaborating to help steer the research in the path with highest probability for clinical translation. Interacting with the excellent researchers in the MSRC family gave me the chance to understand the importance of critically reviewing and clearly communicating one's efforts to accomplish research goals. Indeed, I always enjoyed the Monday morning meetings where research was reviewed with a critical eye. Additionally, in presenting my own work and listening to my peers at both the annual Pittsburgh Tissue Engineering Initiative Summer Internship Poster Session and the annual MSRC Summer Symposium, I was given the opportunity to grasp the vastness of the fields of biomechanics and tissue engineering and their significance for the future care of patients. On the social side, I had a great time in the city of Pittsburgh, and have gained valuable friendships. I had a good time playing soccer with MSRC family. I intend to apply for graduate admission to the University of Pittsburgh Biomedical Engineering program with the hope of continuing research at the Musculoskeletal Research Cen ter. Thank you for opening your doors to me.

Sincerely,
Christopher Carruthers

The purpose of the MSRC Summer Research Program is to expose students to orthopaedic research so that they may augment their class work with practical, hands-on experience. Each summer, the MSRC welcomes 10-12 undergraduate students from a variety of schools for a 12 week experience. During their time with us, each student is responsible for a specific project that is vital to their respective research group. At the end of the summer, students write an abstract that is published in our annual report and present their work at the MSRC Summer Research Program Annual Symposium.

This twelve-week program begins in May and runs through August. For detailed information regarding student projects, please view the past years Summer Research booklets (links below).
