- Biomechanics of Pelvic Organ Floor
Current project:Pelvic organ prolapse is a problem associated with the decrease in the biomechanical properties of tissues. It has been shown to affect as many as 50% of women who have given birth at least once, although only 10-20% may experience symptoms. What is even more striking is that 33% of the women having surgeries for POP may need to have the surgery repeated. The goal of our project is to characterize the differences in the biomechanical properties of the vaginal wall and its supporting structures, which could lead to findings that will help us provide early diagnosis and improved remedies for patients with pelvic organ prolapse.
