Dr. Cy Frank received his undergraduate education at the University of Alberta, achieving a Science Degree in Zoology and a Professional Diploma in Education as well as doing two years in Genetics, prior to entering the University of Calgary (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) in Medicine. He graduated in Medicine in 1976 and then graduated in Orthopaedic Surgery in 1980. He then did 3 years of basic research at the University of California, San Diego and 6 months of subspecialty training in Knee Surgery at the University of Toronto. He returned to the Faculty of the University of Calgary in 1984 where he has specialized in Knee Surgery and has continued doing research in the areas of ligament healing, ligament transplantation and gene therapy. Dr. Frank is currently Professor and Chief of the Division of Orthopaedics University of Calgary/Calgary Health Region; an Alberta Heritage Research Scientist; the McCaig Professor of Joint Injury and Arthritis Research; the Scientific Director of the Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis Institute of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research; and the Director of the Bone and Joint Institute for the Faculty of Medicine. He was named as the 2002 Distinguished Alumni for the University of Calgary. Over the years he has Chaired or been a member of many local, national and international committees for many different associations (The Arthritis Society, Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Canadian Orthopaedic Association, Deputy Editor of the Journal of Orthopaedic Research, etc.) As of March 1, 2004 he has published 193 peer-reviewed publications, 34 book chapters, and 289 abstracts; and made 160 presentations (locally, nationally and internationally).
