Resources for Service Learning

The following people and organizations are excellent resources who can help you learn more about the "world of service learning." Several of these resources are available to those of us in the Greater Pittsburgh area. They are also very valuable for those looking for information to design a service learning program or just to learn more about service learning in general.
A World of Opportunities... Michael Sandy is the coordinator of the Student Volunteer Outreach. This program works to engage students in community service. The Student Volunteer Outreach works with students and the community to develop community service programs. As the Outreach coordinator, Michael Sandy has a great knowledge of the service organizations within the community and will help make your service learning connection easier.
Cynthia Fish is the director of the Service-Learning Initative at the University of Pittsburgh. Ms. Fish works to implement service-learning programs in school districts in the Greater Pittsburgh area, as well as in the University of Pittsburgh community.
The United Way is one of the organizations with which the Student Volunteer Outreach works. There are several service opportunities within this organization which may provide a "service learning connection." The United Way can provide service opportunities covering topics ranging from adult mentors for children, to helping to provide temporary housing for young women and their children, to assisting teenage parents to acquire their GEDs and many more. The United Way is also not limited just to the Pittsburgh area. Check with the United Way in your town.
