Personal
Born:
in Chelyabinsk, the Soviet Union, in 1955. This city is now famous for the explosion of a nuclear reactor in its vicinities in 1957. The scale of the explosion probably exceeded that of Chernobyl. In about 4 years after the bang, my radioactively labeled nuclear family moved to the city of Kuybyshev (presently renamed back to Samara).Graduated:
from the Moscow State Universityin 1978 (State means that it was under the Union's jurisdiction, rather than, say, Russian Federation's). Ph.D. in Biology (Genetics) in 1984. Did this and that, and finally got involved in the genetic studies of alcoholism because of my special interest in behavior genetics.
Reborn:
I left the good old USSR in December 1990, before the conversion of that creature into a model "democracy" that tests its weaponry on its own citizens. Since in Israel, one of my potential destinations, alcoholism was not popular, I went as a refugee to the States. In half a year of sitting by a swimming pool at my friend's house in Jacksonville, FL, I joined CEDAR (Center for Education and Drug Abuse Research), University of Pittsburgh, a 20-year family/high-risk study of substance abuse. CEDAR has supported many other projects, including my own research.
