Welcome to ENGR 0715: Engineering Applications for Society!

By: Monica Stalzer

The University of Pittsburgh is amazing! Even as a lowly freshmen engineering student, my time here at Pitt as undoubtedly been one of the most amazing times of my life. My decision to come here, although based on no obvious concrete reasoning, has lead to a college experience above and beyond what I ever expected.

Speaking of underestimation, the classes and workload of the freshmen engineering curriculum were also far above what I had anticipated. My classes last semester, especially with several honors courses, were challenging and certainly kept me busy. However, unlike many schools, at Pitt, especially within the School of Engineering, you have a support system of professors, advisors, and TA’s that genuinely want you to succeed. This creates an atmosphere for success, giving us students the confidence to succeed.

Since coming to the University of Pittsburgh I have decided on a chemical engineering major, most likely with a bioengineering and chemistry minor. (On a side note, I am also aiming to earn the Honors College BPhil degree) This field appeals to me for many reasons. Ideally I would like to work with the medical applications of chemical engineering. A major in chemical engineering would allow me to peruse a career is areas such as the production of artificial organs, as well as the design and running of pharmaceutical plants. These careers appeal to me because of their high-tech nature and potential for impact on society. Chemical engineers also enjoy good working environments, providing them the opportunity for field work as well as travel. My parents, an engineer and pharmacist, also had a large impact on my choice of chemical engineering and career ambitions.
