ENGR 0715: Engineering Applications for Society
Michael Grusch
I have lived in the Pittsburgh area my whole life, and I attended Baldwin High School, which is located about 10 miles south of Pittsburgh. Although I graduated in the top 1% of my class, I definitely do not miss that place very much. It is nice to be around other students who actually value education and realize the benefits of it. One unique experience that I took part in while in high school is that I was selcted to represent my school on the TV show called "Hometown High-Q." It was interesting to see how even a small television show is produced. Even though my major is mechanical engineering, I am also interested in meteorology and astronomy. I treat these subjects as hobbies instead of as study areas. I simply love to gaze into the night sky and contemplate the immensity and importance of these seemingly insignificant points of light that lie billions of miles away. I also like to tune into The Weather Channel to see if any extreme weather is on the way. You can only be amazed by the pure power of nature. Another interest that I have is the German language. I studied German all throughout high school and even took a semester of German here at Pitt. I also love a wide range of music, though country and rap are not a part of this range. It is amazing how inspiring and motivating music truly can be. Some of my favorite songs to listen to come from the German rock bands called Rammstein and Megaherz. Movies, on the other hand, are not much of an interest for me. Unfortunately, my knowledge of classical physics has really ruined some otherwise great movies. The hobby that has had the biggest impact on my life is my decision to maintain an active lifestyle. It is all too apparent in today's society how people have accepted a sedentary lifestyle and have forgotten to take care of their bodies. I believe that the effects of such a lifestyle go beyond the physical and actually interefere with the mind. Finally, I consider myself to be someone of high morals. It is only through living a good life that true happiness can be attained.

Civil Engineers are chiefly concerned with the design and construction of various projects.
One of the issues to be addressed for my team's project is the site's retaining walls. There are actually many different types of retaining walls to choose from.
Physics is the science that describes the way the world works. In order to partake in any project related to engineering, it is important to have a strong grasp of this subject.
