ENGR 0715: Engineering Applications for Society

Michael Sweriduk

My name is Michael Sweriduk, and I am a freshman in the Engineering program at Pitt. I attended Lansdale Catholic High School in Lansdale, PA, a suburb of Philadelphia and home of the LC Crusaders. In high school, I was involved with the tennis team, Robotics club, Boy Scouts, National Honor Society, Mathletes, and school newspaper. I am a huge sports fan, with my favorites being football, baseball, and tennis. Being from the Philly suburbs, I loyally support the Philadelphia Eagles and the World Champion Philadelphia Phillies. I also am a big fantasy sports fan, with active leagues in both fantasy football and baseball. When I am not busy with schoolwork or hanging out with friends, I like to read (especially about history) and play video games. I am currently undecided as to what major I wish to pursue, though I am leaning towards Civil Engineering. Within this major, I would be most interested in the construction of buildings and bridges, with a particular focus on green technology. I have a deep concern about global warming, as well as a desire to help others. With a career in Civil Engineering, I feel that I can accomplish both of these goals. Besides Civil, the other departments I am considering are Computer and Industrial Engineering. I finally decided on Pitt in a rather roundabout way. When I was first considering schools, Pitt was not even on my radar. However, I had numerous friends who were applying here. I had heard so many people rave about the school that I decided to plan a visit. It was not long after that I sent in my application. My final decision was tough, but I was won over by everything Pitt had to offer, and could not be happier with my decision.
