Medic 14 began it's services in the City of Pittsburgh as EMT 2 on January 9, 1984.  EMT 2 was a Basic Life Support (BLS) unit, which responded to calls with two Emergency Medical Technicians.  EMT 2 responded on various calls for more than a year and a half.  EMT 2 was stationed at 22nd St. and Liberty Ave. with Medic 9.  The current station of Medic 9 and Pittsburgh EMS Training.  EMT 2 worked until December 9, 1985 as a BLS unit.  On this morning at 0700 hours, Medic 14 went into service.  Medic 14 was a two shift truck working from seven o'clock in the morning to eleven o'clock in the evening.  The medic unit is now staffed 24 hours a day 7 days a week by two paramedics.  The shifts at Medic 14 are slightly different than the rest of the city units.  Medic 14 has a permanent night turn shift working from 11 to 7.  With the day light and evening rotating every other month.
Medic 14's response district covers all of "Downtown Pittsburgh", Station Square area of Southside and the Lower Hill District.  Along with all three rivers around downtown and the Mellon Arena.  During the night shift the unit also covers the Penn Park/Strip District area of the City.  Medic 14 also responses to other parts of the city when the regular medic unit of that area are on other calls.
Downtown Pittsburgh is a very busy and congested place to be during the 9-5 rush hours.  Paramedics of Medic 14 respond to many different and sometimes difficult calls.  Everything from a heart attack at a business office, a person tripped while shopping, to more time consuming calls like a multiple car accident on one of the many bridges downtown, to a person threatening their own life trying to jump from a bridge.
