October6, 1997. After a long, dry autumn, the heavans opened
up and blessed the Earth with bountiful rains, cleansing the dust
choked streets of Pittsburgh. Always in tune with higher forces,
this day was also designated as the Rascal cleanup day at the West End
Circle. 3 intrepid Rascals, Mark, Don and Lee met at Georgie's on
the southern side of Mt Washington for breakfast. Just because they
were determined to unclog the arteries of the city with their cleanup efforts,
this did not deter them from clogging their own arteries with eggs, bacon
and hash browns. As they stood up to leave the restaurant with trash
bags and orange vests, they were met with rumbling cheers from the other
patrons. Or perhaps it was their own gastro-intestinal systems protesting.
In any case, through pouring rain, they set
upon the task of making the West End Circle the Jewel in PennDOT's crown
of roadways. After 12 hours of grueling labor, these galant
grennadiers of garbage completed their task. 20 cinchsaks filled
to the brim gave testimony to their efforts.
Future forays to this Circle of Glory are planned.
Perhaps more Rascals will heed the call and lend their backs to this
most worthy effort.
