Philanthropic support from individuals and foundations to support
service-learning programs at the University of Pittsburgh make an immediate
difference in the success of our programs.
Pitt students' tuition, fees, and grants provide funds for the basic program costs. As part of our academic program in education we work with local teachers to develop effective curriculum materials and policies. Thus, in addition to philanthropic support, materials such as pencils, books, creative playthings, and furniture are needed for use by the Pitt program. In addition, in the past funds have been used to create a photocopying and purchasing account so that we can buy books for a campus-wide Resource Center on international service-learning and to subscribe to a leading journal in the field that Hillman Library otherwise does not carry. We have also worked closely with the Center for Latin American Studies to do outreach in local schools about education and sustainable development using research done through LINCS. Your gifts also support Pitt students and faculty members collaboratively publishing research on service-learning, participating in conferences, and doing documentary multi-media work. Thus, through the generous contributions of our supporters, the program has been able to provide the "extras" that enhance learning opportunities and enable the Pitt LINCS program to achieve the ideals of the School of Education to engage in scholarship that makes a difference in the global village. The Pitt LINCS community of practice is so much more than just the 20 or so members of each project! We welcome you to join the growing network of our friends, colleagues, families, alumni and other supporters who believe in Pitt LINCS and the local development projects. Your support can take many forms - emotional, technical, material, and/or financial. For example, principal Heidi Ondek and students from the "Random Acts of Kindness" club at Bellevue Elementary School donated boxes of left over school supplies. Carol of Color Me Mine ceramics studio helped us afford to donate the ceramic tiles that you see on the walls, and José Molina, an art teacher at Aliquippa High School, and his students painted the A-Z set in Spanish. Ikea donated wooden learning manipulatives and toys. The University ofPittsburgh and local civic clubs gave us pencils and other writing tools.
The most popular way of contributing to the program is through a gift to
support the general operations costs of the Pitt program. This general fund is
used for such things as student scholarships and travel costs, documentation
and research supplies, equipment, curriculum materials, and general operational
support. You can donate any amount at any time. As we build infrastructure,
your donations are the metaphorical "bricks" in our educational base.
We suggest buying a metaphorical "brick" for $10 or a "cornerstone" for $50.
You can buy it in your own name, in honor or a child or loved one, or you may
remain anonymous.
The University's Annual Fund helps us assure accountability of the funds
received. Their support demonstrates how LINCS is integral to Pitt's mission of
making a difference in our interdependent world.
Remember, donations officially made to LINCS may be tax-deductable.
There are four simple methods to donate.
