Sociology 2429: Women In Society
This graduate course is designed for students in the social sciences and
women's studies who are interested in a graduate-level survey of issues of
gender power in (mostly) contemporary societies.
I specifically want to serve students who are:
- Preparing for a preliminary or comprehensive examination in gender.
- Preparing to teach an undergraduate course in gender and social
institutions, either in the social sciences or in women's studies.
- Preparing an empirical paper on a topic relevant to the sociology of
gender.
This course will eventually be part of the specialization in Race, Class,
and Gender area in the graduate program at the University of Pittsburgh.
The reading list will include the following texts, which have been ordered
from the University Book Center for Spring 1996:
- Ann Ferguson, Sexual Democracy.
- Demie Kurz, For Richer, For Poorer: Mothers Confront Divorce.
- Myra Marx Ferree and Beth Hess (Eds.), Analyzing Gender.
- Judith Lorber, Paradoxes of Gender.
- Celia Kitzinger, The Social Construction of Lesbianism.
- R.W. Connell, Masculinities.
- Catharine MacKinnon, Toward a Feminist Theory of the State.
