El territorio maya: Memoria de la Quinta Mesa Redonda de Palenque

edited by Rodrigo Liendo Stuardo

As hegemony or passive acceptance of a territorial organization is always subject to negotiation and renegotiation, producing situations of conflict, the concept of territoriality is an essential element in the study of spacial organization of any human group. This concept can be defined as a conscious and active effort to influence and control resources and people in a determined area. The Fifth Mesa Redonda de Palenque brought together experts from different disciplines to analyze the issue of the "Maya territory" and this volume contains the papers resulting from the meeting. This analysis of Maya territory was based on three general ideas: the territory as social construct; the territory as an environment closely linked to the history of space, time, and organization; and the territory as an excluding process resulting in political, economic, and ideological boundaries.
