Wankarani Settlement Dataset
Timothy L. McAndrews

The Wankarani Settlement dataset complements the book Wankarani Settlement Systems in Evolutionary Perspective: A Study in Early Village-Based Society and Long Term Cultural Evolution in the South-Central Andean Altiplano   by Timothy L. McAndrews (available from the University of Pittsburgh Latin American Archaeology Publications).  It consists of the detailed data from the regional survey carried out in the Bolivian Altiplano and discussed in full in the printed volume, whose contents are as follows:
  • Chapter 1: Theoretical Background
  • Chapter 2: Field Methodology
  • Chapter 3: Cultural Context and Chronology
  • Chapter 4: Environmental Setting
  • Chapter 5: Wankarani Settlement Systems in the La Joya, Río Kochi, and Belén Regions
  • Chapter 6: Post-Wankarani Settlement Patterns in the Research Zone
  • Chapter 7: The Emergence and Organization of Wankarani Village-Based Settlement and Subsequent Cultural Trajectories

CONTENTS OF THE DATASET

The first file is an AutoCAD ASCII file (a .DXF file), which has been saved with the extension .TXT, because this makes it easier for some Web browsers to download it correctly. It will probably need to be renamed with the extension .DXF to be read by AutoCAD or imported into another program. The second is a PDF file, which can be read with Acrobat Reader. The rest of the files are ASCII text data files, consisting of cases (rows) and columns (variables) that can be read directly or easily imported to an application program such as a database manager or statistics package.

Locational information about the survey area, its topography, and the sites encountered, all in the form of an AutoCAD map.

Site descriptions in the form of a PDF file, which can be read with Acrobat Reader.

A complete listing of sites with information about chronology, function, location, and area is provided in the file SITEINFO.TXT. Quantities of artifacts of different types collected at all the sites are provided in the file ARTIFACTS.TXT.
The data upon which Wankarani site population estimates and catchment analysis are based are provided in the file POPDATA.TXT. Data on Wankarani artifact densities and their confidence intervals are provided in the file WART.TXT.
Data on Late Intermediate artifact densities and their confidence intervals are provided in the file LIART.TXT. Data on Wankarani projectile points are provided in the file WPNT.TXT.
Results of cluster analysis of Late Intermediate farmsteads are provided in the file KMEANS.TXT. Data on ceramics from systematic surface collections are provided in the file COLCER.TXT.
Thickness measurements for rim sherds recovered in systematic excavations are provided in the file RIMTHK.TXT. Data on lithic artifacts from systematic surface collections are provided in the file COLLIT.TXT.
