Music
- The Beatles.
- Brand X, a jazz 'fusion' group
that at one time had Phil Collins as drummer.
- Cheap Trick, the American power
pop band that just gets better with age.
- The Dixie Dregs, another one
of those cool 'fusion' groups. Is it rock, is it jazz, is it country, is it prog? Who
knows?
- Emerson, Lake & Palmer, the
classic British progressive rock group.
- Fairport Convention, the
definitive British folk/rock group.
- The Flower Kings, a Swedish
progressive band.
- Genesis, the progressive
rock/pop group of the 1960s - 1990s. (I prefer the band's music through
about 1977.)
- Gentle Giant, another eclectic
progressive band from the '70s, defunct since 1980, but they made some
incredible music.
- Glass Hammer, an American
progressive band from Chattanooga, TN.
- Roy Harper, a
British folk musician often ignored by the public and industry
alike.
- Jimi
Hendrix.
- Allan Holdsworth,
an amazing British jazz/rock guitarist.
- Jethro
Tull, a premier British
progressive/folk/rock group for 35 years.
- King Crimson, a classic British
progressive rock group that is still making challenging music in the
21st century (schizoid man).
- Shawn
Lane, an amazing rock / fusion guitarist
who sadly passed away at age 40 in September 2003.
- Led Zeppelin, probably THE
great rock band of all time - and NOT because of "Stairway To Heaven"!
- Magenta, an amazing
progressive band from the UK.
- Pink Floyd, the kings of "space
rock"!
- Porcupine Tree, a British
psychedelic/progressive band.
- Progressive Rock. You've
probably never heard of most of this type of band, but as you can
probably tell from my tastes in music I'm very fond of "prog". (Other bands I listen to, other than the
ones listed elsewhere on this page, include Gong and Ozric Tentacles .) What is "prog", you ask? "Progressive rock was what
happened in the early 70's when certain brilliant instrumentalists got
fed up with playing three-and-a-half minute long songs about teenage
love. Unfortunately, this led them to start playing ten-and-a-half
minute long songs about nothing in particular."-- Geoff Nicholson, `Big
Noises: Rock Guitar in the 1990s', Quadrant Books, 1991.
- Rush.
- Salem Hill, an American
progressive band.
- Sonny Sharrock.
Sonny was a jazz/rock guitar innovator who sadly passed away in 1994. I
enjoy his music, which can at times be beautiful or terrifying,
sometimes both.
- Spock’s Beard, an American
progressive band.
- Richard Thompson, THE British
folk/pop guitarist/songwriter/vocalist. A cult hero,
and a nice guy too.
- Transatlantic, a progressive “supergroup” with members of Spock’s Beard, The
Flower Kings, Marillion, and Dream
Theater.
- The Who, the classic rock
group.
- Yes, another one of those old
British groups I listen to a lot.
