My name is Justin Thomas and I am a first year Engineering student at the University of Pittsburgh. I was born in New York city but later moved to a little suburban town in New Jersey. I am a regular teenager, who loves hanging out with friends and playing sports. My favorite sports teams are the New York Giants and the New York Yankees. My dream job would be to play left field for the New York Yankees but that probably won't happen so I hope this engineering thing works out.

When I was searching for schools, I was pulled towards the University of Pittsburgh because I missed the city feel. It was the summer going into senior year when I first stepped foot on the University of Pittsburgh's (Pitt) campus. Immediately, I fell in love with the school. I was blown away by the sense of community, the diversity of the students, and the obvious pride and enthusiasm, but most of all I was impressed by the engineering building. My tour guide brought me into Benedum Hall and I instantly felt like I belonged. I explored the classrooms and labs and felt like I was at home. While I walked through the building where I would be spending most of my time as a freshman, I envisioned myself becoming an engineering student at Pitt and thought to myself "I have to go here".Not only is Pitt's Swanson School of Engineering (SSOE) a highly ranked school but there are also several organizations within the school dedicated to the helping underreprestnedted students succeed such as Pitt EXCEL and the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). The National Society of Black Engineers is a student run organization dedicated to the betterment of African American students in the field of engineering. Knowing that these organizations existed gave me the hope that I would have the resources I needed to succeed. The overwhelming feeling of community, the incredible energy exhibited by students and staff, and the phenomenal engineering program are all reasons why I came to the Swanson School. Using the tools provided to me I hope to succeed in the field of engineering and develop ground breaking technologies to better soceity.
