Research:

I considering myself a "systems guy."  My research spans the many related disciplines of dynamics, vibrations, controls, analog and digital signal processing, autonomous system health monitoring, smart materials, acoustics, and structural acoustics.  The confluence of these related disciplines is often  referred to as research in smart structures, adaptive systems or structures, or active control.  Specifically, my research has involved development of sensors and actuators as well asnovel control algorithms and approaches, investigation of new system health monitoring methods, control development for biological systems, algorithm development for signal classification using artificial neurlal networks and Bayesian statistics.   Some current projects include: I have also founded the Sound, Systems, and Structures Laboratory in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh.  This  laboratory includes 1,000 square feet of bench space, state of the art equipment, and an anechoic chamber facility with a volume of approximately 5,000 cubic feet.  Funding has been obtained from NSF, DARPA/Army, SERDP, AFRL, NIOSH, Aerotech, Inc., and US Dept of Energy (NETL).
