How to run MATLAB from a remote or network computer
without MATLAB

Click the "Connect" button
Be sure to read any "Security Information" windows that are
displayed, and click "Continue." If you click "Cancel," you will
not
be able to download the
program. Login with you Pitt userid and password.
The next page displays three drop menus. Select "All
Vendors" for the Vendors menu, "Network Connectivity" for the Category
menu, and "Windows" for the
Operating System menu. Then click "Go".
Find the listing for Novell LAN Workplace v5.1. Click on the "LAN Workplace" hyperlink.
Click on the "lwp51.exe" link. The patches (other three
files listed) are recommended, but not required. If the program
does not
run correctly, try
downloading and installing the patches IN ORDER.
Choose a location to save the file. Be sure to remember where you saved the file.
Once the download is complete, run the file.
Be sure the check box for "When Done Unzipping Run: SETUP.EXE" is checked. Then, click "Unzip."
When the files are unzipped, the "setup.exe" file will run, and a new window will come up. Click "English."
Select the type of installation you want to perform. If unknown, click on "Single." Then click "Next."
Enter your Name and Company. Then click "Next."
For the serial number, you can enter anything of your choosing
(i.e. "1", "A", "4c", "iloveME1014", etc...), but do not leave it
blank. Then click
"Next."
In the "Which Set of LAN Workplace PRO applications do you need?" box, select "CUSTOM." Then click "Next."
In the "Components" box, "Required Program Files" and "X-Server"
MUST be checked. You can select anything else at your
option. Again, click
"Next."
Select an installation folder, then click "Next." Otherwise, to accept the default folder assignment, simply click "Next."
At the last window, make sure all information is correct, then click "Next." This will complete the installation.
Double click "configuration survey" and type in "unixs.cis.pitt.edu" and see if you can get through ok.
Double click "Xserver" icon. Click the "configure"
tab. Click the "XDM" tab. for "Type of query" choose
"direct" for
"Direct or Indirect
Host" type "unixs.cis.pitt.edu" into the box.
Now quit X-server and rerun by double clicking the icon again.
One of the Unixs hosts should appear in the box. Double
click to run and log in as you would on the Unix machines on the 10th
floor of Benedum.
TO RUN MATLAB:
In the Terminal type "matlab" If the Terminal is closed,
right click on the desktop in the Unix environment, click "Tools," then
click "Terminal."
