ENGR 0715 - Engineering Applications for Society

Joseph Durko

Hi, my name is Joseph Durko! I come from the small town of Cokeburg, Pennsylvania in south western PA. I am a graduate of nearby Bentworth High School where I took classes in Physics, Chemistry, Calculus and Economics. My hobbies include playing guitar (both real and virtual), playing video games and snowboarding. I also love watching Football, comedy movies and TV shows like Scrubs, The Venture Brothers and Futurama. As you can see, I have a passion for art of comedy so I also love watching a good stand-up comedy performance and have even created my own for my senior project in high school (it wasn’t that funny, but I still passed, so it’s all good). I might like comedy, but if there’s one thing I don’t joke about: Engineering. I decided to become an engineer since I love to build things (for example, my job during High School was working in a motorcycle shop, repairing old British bikes) and I realized that a career in Engineering provides the perfect environment to constantly learn new things while solving problems to better society. I chose the University of Pittsburgh for the education because I heard great things about the engineering program, and what I heard was right! I'm thinking of becoming a Mechanical Engineer so I can work with other engineers in developing new sources of energy. This would help me in learning new things about the forces that drive society while helping make machines like motorcycles more efficient so that we can all pay less just to get around. I’m currently having a great time here at Pitt and hope to graduate in 4 years and start towards a bright new future.
