Over the past two centuries a large number of
countries have developed democratic institutions. This has been brought about
through the challenges that social movements have posed to elite powerholders. A
good deal of democratization has happened in the course of several
multinational, even multicontinental, waves in which many countries have
undergone significant changes at about the same time. What do such processes
indicate about the future of democracy?
