As I pursue a path toward
Unitarian Universalist ministry, I have had to give up many of my
responsibilities as a youth advisor. In 2007, I participated in
the Bridging Ceremony at First Unitarian Church of Pittsburgh not as
leader, but as a fellow bridger with my youth. Our tradition is
to give the bridging youth a vase and do a responsive reading with the
congregation that talks about what that vase represents. The
younger members of the youth group make these vases for the bridgers at
the studio of a member of our congregation. This is the vase my
youth made for me. As I said during the ceremony, it is so
appropriate that they gave me the world, because that is exactly what
our youth have given me over the years.
