About
Hola! I am Jordan Barria-Pineda, 6th year Ph.D. student at the School of Computing and Information, University of Pittsburgh, USA. I received a B.S. in Engineering and a professional title of Computer Engineer from Universidad Austral de Chile (UACh).
My Ph.D. advisor is Dr. Peter Brusilovsky (head of the PAWS Lab), and my co-advisor is Dr. Erin Walker (head of the FACET Lab). My research interests are the Information Visualization, Adaptive Information Systems and Human-Computer Interaction fields. I would like to explore how to combine these knowledge areas with the aim of building systems able to influence users to make positives changes in their online behavior, specially in online learning environments.
News
Nov. 2022: I successfully passed (with distinction) my Comprehensive Exam! 🎉 (Areas of concentration: Recommender Systems, User-Centered Design, Visual Analytics for Explainable AI).
May 2022: I started working in the "Cuéntame Cuentos" project with Dr. Erin Walker, Dr. Luis Pérez-Cortes and Dr. Diana Leyva.
April 2021: Our paper titled "Explainable Recommendations in a Personalized Programming Practice System", was accepted in the International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIED '21).
Dec 2019: Our paper with Dr. Cecilia di Sciacio, titled "Understanding the Effects of Control and Transparency in Searching as Learning", was accepted in the International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces 2020 (IUI '20).
Nov 2019: I joined the e-board of the Latin American Graduate Organization of Students (LAGOS) at the University of Pittsburgh!, where I will be helping as Outreach Coordinator.
Jun 2019:
Together with my colleagues Dr. Carrie Demmans Epp and Dr. Sharon Hsiao, I participated as an instructor of the Workshop on Learner-Centered Visual Learning Analytics, which took place in the Learning Analytics Summer Institute 2019 (LASI '19) @ Vancouver, Canada.
The joint work that Dr. Laia AlbĂł did with us during her research visit, titled Concept-Level Design Analytics for Blended Courses, was accepted as paper in the 14th European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning (EC-TEL '19).
May 2017: Our paper with Hung Chau titled "Content Wizard: Concept-based Recommender System for Instructors of Programming Courses" was accepted in the 4th International Workshop on Educational Recommender Systems at the International Conference on User Modeling, Adaptation and Personalization 2017 (UMAP '17).
Sept 2016: I started my first term as a Ph.D. student at the School of Computing and Information, University of Pittsburgh, USA.
