DIAMOND INVESTIGATORS MEETING

At the 1993 annual meeting of the American Diabetes Association, in Las Vegas, Nevada, a meeting for the DIAMOND participants was held on June 14th. More than 10 DIAMOND Participating Centers were represented at the session. The status of each DIAMOND component was discussed followed by a brief report by the local investigators.

The sixth meeting of the DIAMOND Steering Committee took place in Las Vegas. Copies of the minutes are available by request.

STATUS OF DIAMOND COMPONENTS

- Local MOO's

Thus far, 91 local MOO's have been received. As announced in previous circulars, the centers that have sent the local MOO are considered Participant Members of DIAMOND, while the centers that have not sent the local MOO are considered Associate Members. All will continue to receive the circulars and correspondence. However, future papers will only include Participant members. An updated list of both, the Participant and Associate members, is included in Annex 1.

- Incidence Study

Up to June 1993, 63 centers have submitted population data and 60 centers incidence data (see Annex 2). A DIAMOND publication, including the incidence data, will be prepared with the data available. The deadline of the publication is by the end of the year 1993. We encourage the other centers to send the data as soon as possible to the Helsinki Coordinating Center.

- Mortality Study

Two surveys have been conducted to assess the interest among DIAMOND centers in participating in the DIAMOND Mortality Study. Response to the initial survey conducted in Spring of 1992, was positive with 17 centers indicating an interest in participating. A second general survey of interest was mailed as part of Circular 10 in April 1993. An additional 14 centers responding to this survey have expressed their interest in participating. A list of all 31 interested centers is provided in Annex 3. It is planned to collect mortality data and prepare a paper by the end of 1993 on global IDDM mortality patterns.

A sample methods of operation will be mailed to each center that has expressed interest in participating during July 1993. This sample will serve as a model for development of local mortality MOOs.

- Socio/economics

The manuscript "Global Regulations Concerning Insulin-Treated Diabetes and Commercial Motor Vehicle Operation" has been accepted for publication in the British Medical Journal (BMJ).

- Training

As announced in previous circulars, the 1st Latin American Course on Diabetes Epidemiology will be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina from October 13 to 21, 1993. It is being organized by the Alberto Roemmers Foundation and the WHO DIAMOND Project.

Plans are underway to hold two other training courses: one in Saudi Arabia from January 29 to February 3, 1994 and the second Japan-U.S. course to be held in 1995.
