China's large and dynamic economy is in the midst of a spectacular and unexpected growth spurt. China's recent economic experience raises important questions about the transition from socialism, the nature of market systems, and the implications of Asia's growing economic power. This course approaches these issues by examining the development of China's economy since 1800 with particular emphasis on studying China's experience under different forms of economics organization (market economy, central planning, reformed system combining plan and market) and comparing China's development with that other nations.
