UNDERGRADUATE

Undergraduate Program in Hispanic Languages and Literatures

The undergraduate program in Hispanic languages and literatures at the University of Pittsburgh is designed to be flexible and diverse in order to meet the needs of students with varying interests and career goals.

The major offers a combination of core and intermediate courses designed to strengthen language skills and general knowledge of Spanish and Latin American literatures and cultures, and elective upper level courses to fit special interests or needs. All majors take the senior capstone seminar (Spanish 1303). Many students study abroad in Spain or Latin America.

In consultation with the departmental undergraduate advisor, a selection of courses from the major can also be used to construct a related area or a minor in Spanish and/or Portuguese. A variety of courses—some taught in English—for non-majors interested in Hispanic, Latin American, Luso-Brazilian, or U.S. Latino culture are also available. We encourage majors to include at least a semester of study abroad in a Spanish- or Portuguese-speaking country if possible.

Students interested in going on to graduate school should strongly consider the honors major. Majors also have the unique opportunity to learn Portuguese, thereby opening channels of communication with millions of people in countries around the world, including Brazil, Latin America's largest and most heavily populated country.
