The department is the site of the Mellon-endowed chair in Modern Languages. Daniel Balderston currently holds this chair. Previous holders include A. A. Parker, Javier Herrero, Gonzalo Sobejano, Edmond Cros, and Gerald Martin.

Distinguished professors in the department have included Guillermo Sucre, Alfredo Roggiano, and Antonio Cornejo-Polar, and (as visitors) Octavio Paz, Damaso Alonso, and Juan Goytisolo.
