• Auditions: Auditions are open to all registered students at the University of Pittsburgh. One way to sign up for an audition is to visit the HCC table at the Student activities Fair in the Petersen Events Center, which is held annually on the Sunday before the start of the fall semester. That’s a great place to meet some of the current members and ask any questions you might have about the Choir. You can also sign up for an audition online using this link to our audition appointment page, or using the form below. Auditions are 10 minutes long and are held during the first four days of classes during fall semester. If you have problems scheduling an audition or have any questions, please contact HCC’s director, Dr. Susan Rice.

Auditions are held only in the fall. Although we do make some adjustments to our roster over winter break due to members studying abroad, we generally pull from our list of alternates to round out the Choir. (So don't give up hope if you're picked as an alternate!)

If you have problems scheduling an audition or have any questions, please contact director Dr. Susan Rice.
  • Course Credit: Members may elect to enroll with the University in MUSIC 0612 as a course each semester, in order to earn one academic credit for their participation in the Choir. These credits can be used to fulfill the "ensemble participation" requirement for music majors and music minors.
  • Commitment: The Choir rehearses every Tuesday and Thursday during both fall and spring semesters from 4:00pm to 5:50pm. Members are expected to sing in the Choir for both semesters, although exceptions are generally made for those studying abroad and planning to return.

Members are also expected to sing numerous concerts and attend various functions throughout the year. In general, our annual schedule is as follows:

    Time of Year Commitment Events
early October most of a weekend The Pitt Choirs Showcase is held on a Sunday afternoon. A dress rehearsal with the Men's Glee Club and Women's Choral Ensemble is usually scheduled on Saturday.
mid-October one full weekend Fall Choir Camp, a "pack a bag and stay overnight" experience where we not only rehearse a lot of our music, but we really get to know each other and coalesce as a group.
early December two weekends Six highly-regarded Holiday Concerts held in Heinz Memorial Chapel, beginning with a free "dress rehearsal" concert for the campus community during regular rehearsal time. Two public ticketed concerts are then given on each of the following two weekends. In the intervening week, the Chancellor hosts a special private concert for University staff. (And everything's done in time for Finals.)
late January half of a Saturday Winter Choir Camp, a shorter, half-day version of Fall Choir Camp, with much the same purposes.
February 14th a few hours Delivering Singing Valentines, a Heinz Chapel Choir tradition.
mid-February one Sunday afternoon Our annual Chamber Choir Festival is held on a Sunday afternoon.
mid-April a couple of weekends Our Spring Concert sees the bulk of our off-campus touring. Concerts are scheduled for some Saturdays and Sundays over two or three weekends, leading up to our concert in Heinz Chapel on a Sunday afternoon.

Due to the nature of scheduling for Heinz Memorial Chapel, concerts are generally booked a full 12 months in advance, so most dates for the season are available before the start of the fall semester. Choir members are expected to keep all concert dates free from other obligations. If you'd like to see this year's schedule, head to our calendar of events.
  • Tours: The Choir embarks on a two-week international concert tour once every three years at the conclusion of the spring semester. In 2012, the Choir traveled to Peru, and in 2014, the Choir traveled to the Balkans for their last tour with former director Dr. John Goldsmith. Our next tour will revive the tradition of traveling domestically that the original Heinz Chapel Choir experienced with founding director Theodore “Pop” Finney as we venture to Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. during May 2-5, 2016. Our next international tour is scheduled for early May, 2017.
