Pitt-Bolivia: A
Service Learning Course offered by Pitt-Political Science
with Dr. Reinhard Heinisch 2002
Dr. Reinhard Heinisch, UPJ’s Director of International
Studies, led a group of University of Pittsburgh students, including four
from UPJ, to Bolivia for a three-week service learning project from May
22 through June 10, as part of a course on international development in
Latin America. The trip was preceded by three weeks of traditional course
work at the University’s Pittsburgh campus involving in-class lectures
and readings covering such topics as problems of development and democracy
in Andean society, elements of political and economic development, Latin
American political history, development in Bolivia, and specific background
on Andean peasant community life. The group then departed by plane for
Bolivia via Miami and landing in Santa Cruz, where they were able to partner
with a local government agency in Vinto, a small village outside Cochabamba,
to assist in the construction of a perimter wall for the local orphanage.
The construction involved mostly digging and establishing footers and erecting
the brick wall itself. The group included political science senior
Dan Flynn and juniors Cheri Petrovich and Paul Rutledge.
