The International Studies Albert P.Vannucci International Studies Awards for 2003

Sarah Factor in Vienna 2002 with Stephen Hemenway, the Director of the Hope College Vienna Program

Sarah Factor was awarded the Albert P. Vannucci International Studies Award for 2003 as she has made a singular contribution to the International Studies Program over the past 4 years. She was singled out for special honors by the University of Pittsburgh European Union Center for her work in coaching and moderating the University's simulation of the EU summit of Nice. In another instance, the organizers of the Dayton Model UN conference invited her back as committee chair after being impressed with her performance as a participant. Other noteworthy accolades include the Cecil B. Leberknight Award, being outstanding delegate on World Conference on Racism/Dayton Simulation, serving as the President of Student Council on World Affairs/U.Pittsburgh, the President and founder of University of Pittsburgh Unity Coalition, Vice President of the Sociology Club, being elected to a leading position in the Johnstown Chapter of the National Organization of Women, and finally playing a mentioning role in the Alpha Kappa Psi Business Fraternity.  Sarah Factor also served as a student representative on the UPJ President's inter-disciplinary working group charged with enhancing campus diversity.

Jami Ference

Jami Ference has been named the recipient of the Albert P. Vannucci International Studies Award for 2002. Jami completed her Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering Technology in May with an International Studies certificate, and was part of the French delegation to the Model European Union that was recognized as Best Delegation in 2002. Next fall, Jami will enter the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Pittsburgh. The International Studies Award was created to honor significant academic achievement in the newly established international studies certificate program in 1985, and was renamed for UPJ’s first Director of International Studies in 1992.

Shirley R. Hixson and Mica L. Pilz have been named recipients of the Albert P. Vannucci International Studies Award for 2001. The International Studies Award was created to honor significant academic achievement in the newly established international studies certificate program in 1985, and was renamed for UPJ's first Director of International Studies in 1992.

Shirley graduated summa cum laude in May with a dual major in political science and history and completed an International Studies Certificate with concentration in European studies. She has been inducted into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi,  Pi Sigma Alpha national political science honor society and Phi Alpha Theta history honor society. She is the recipient of the Theodore Biddle Alumni Association Scholarship. Last summer she studied art and architecture under the auspices of Hope College in Vienna under Provost, Vannucci, and Fried (Hope College) study abroad scholarships. She has been a member of the UPJ Model United Nations team for two years, and representing France served as presiding officer of the plenary session of Heads of State/Governments of the first Model European Union conference hosted by UPJ and the University of Pittsburgh's European Union Center in late March 2001. Shirley was also one of two recipients of the Robert J. Hunter Scholarship Award given annually to outstanding senior students who exhibit the innovative, enthusiastic and inquiring spirit traditionally associated with scholarship in the social sciences. This coming fall, Shirley begins graduate study in international affairs next under a Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship from the Center for West European Studies and a graduate assistantship in the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Pittsburgh.

Mica graduated magna cum laude in May with a major in political science and an International Studies Certificate in European studies. She has been inducted into Pi Sigma Alpha national political science honor society, Phi Eta Sigma freshman honor society, and the UPJ Chapter of Chi Lambda Tau leadership society, and has served as a resident advisor in the freshman dorms. For two years, Mica has been a member of the UPJ Model United Nations team, and was a delegate representing Portugal in the first Model European Union  conference hosted by UPJ in March. Last summer Mica studied at the Institute of European Studies (IES) European Union/German Studies program at the University of Freiburg in Germany. This coming fall, Mica will enter the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Pittsburgh.
