This term I will teach two sections of Analytic Geometry and Calculus I:

Textbook

James Stewart, Essential Calculus, Early Transcendentals.


Grades will be determined as follows: The course will be curved to have a right distribution of grades.


Exams The final exam is the departmental one and it is the same for all the sections.


Labs (LON-CAPA)

An important part of your work will an assignement generated by a computer.To do this you will need a computer with an Internet connection and you can do the problems even from home. The problems, are, however, difficult and you will need to attend the scheduled sessions at the Lab.

One session each week will meet in the Calculus/Engineering Computer Lab in the Gardner Steel Conference Center (GSCC 126). In the lab, you will work individually on problem solving skills, using computer generated problems. Your TA will be available to help if you get stuck, but your are expected to solve all problems yourself. You will be able to work on your lab problems from any computer with an Internet connection and a web browser, but you should do the most of the work in your scheduled lab sessions.

There may not be enough computers in the Lab you you are encouraged to bring your laptop that has an Internet access to the University network.

Quizzes

Weakly quizzes will be held during recitations. There are no makeup quizzes, but the two lowest scoress will be dropped. Each quiz will last approximately 5-10 minutes and will consist of 2 short problems. Each problem will be scored on the scale 0-2.


Homework

Weakly homework with due dates will be posted online. Each problems will be graded on the 0-10 scale.

Exercise 1.2.4 means Exercise 4 at the end of Section 1.2.

HW#1 Due day: recitations in the week of September 14-18, 2009.

HW#3 Due day: recitations in the week of September 28 - October 2, 2009.

HW#4 Due day: recitations in the week of October 12 - October 16, 2009.

HW#5 Due day: recitations in the week of November 2 - November 6, 2009.

HW#6 Due day: recitations in the week of Thanksgiving.

2009-2010 Academic Calendar


FALL TERM DEADLINE is Friday October 30. Instructors may not assign "W" grades to students. The only valid "W" grades are pre-marked on the form indicating a student has officially withdrawn from the class. Students who wish to withdraw from an undergraduate CAS course without penalty must complete a Monitored Withdrawal from by Friday October 30. These forms are available in CAS Associate Dean's Office. 140 Thackeray Hall.
