Giving Seminars, Or Public Speeches
Groups sometimes have to give a public speech or
seminar. Some groups are specially
formed to give presentations to a group of interested
and excited people. Their are all
kinds of different public speaking forms but for this
part I will focus on giving a seminar or
giving a individual speech on behalf of the group as
a whole. This section is important if you have to give a speech to
your own personal small group. Public speaking is very important
in the business world and you should be able to give a well round speech
to a group of people.
Organizing information and outlining.
In order to give a well orginized speech
or presentation it is critical to be fully prepared for the situation and
also aware of the format in which you will be speaking. After you
know where and in what format you will be talking, it is important to develop
a clear and precise purpose statement. I am assuming that you know
what your topic is.
-
This purpose statement is probably the most important part
of you outline. With out it you tend to get off the topic.
-
Make sure that when you are developing you outline that it
is neat, everything is lined up in the proper order and that it follow
all the rules of a standard outline.
-
I Recommend that for your first draft of you outline that
you use complete sentences, In doing this you can make sure that you have
enough material to give the speech you can always cut material if you need
to.
Practice makes perfect
After you have completed the outline
you should transfer you outline to note cards,
you do not want to right it word for word, because if
you do this you find yourself reading and not talking to the audience.
-
It is very important to practice the speech, and it helps
if you can give it to some other than just practice by yourself.
If no one is around practice in front of a mirror.
-
As you practice giving the speech make sure that you are
looking up at the audience and if you have a time limit make sure you time
yourself before you give the speech infant of the audience.
-
Eye contact is probably the most important part of giving
a good speech, if you do not make good eye contact with the audience you
will most likely lose their attentions and you speech will lose it's effectiveness.
Using visual aids
Visual aids are a great way to give
life to a speech. It let's the audience see what it
is that you are talking about, it is also an opportunity
for you to get your point across.
-
Make sure that when using visual aids that the farthest person
form the stage is able to see the aid clearly, make sure it is designed
neatly, make sure that it will not offend any of you audience.
-
Make sure you do not over do it on you visual aid and not
include enough information in you speech, remember just because you have
a good visual aid does not mean your speech will get across to the audience
without content.
Conclusion
Public speaking is something you must
practice to be good at. Make good use of your resources when designing
a speech. Use you friends or family to practice in front of and ask
them to be observant to what you do good and what aspects of the speech
that you need to work on. The most important thing is giving speeches
is keeping the audiences attention. Practice looking from your notes
to looking back at the audience. If you do not make eye contact with
the audience the speech will not keep their attention and the speech will
not serve its purpose.
