University Council on Graduate Study
AGENDA
Tuesday, November 11, 1997
3:00 - 5:00 pm
817 Cathedral of Learning

I. Approval of Minutes
The minutes of the last meeting of UCGS are attached for your review. I also attach a draft of proposed committee assignments.

II. Evaluation of Academic Programs
The Subcommittee for the Evaluation of Academic Programs (SEAP) and the UCGS will review the reports on the evaluations of four programs in the next few months, the four programs being History, Biological Sciences, Psychology in Education and the doctoral program in Social Work. SEAP is discussing its role in the review of these programs and what type of report it should prepare. At this meeting, I would like UCGS to discuss what role it should play and what purposes should be achieved by presenting reports to the UCGS. As the reviews progress UCGS can examine if these goals are achieved and, if not, what should be changed.

III. Revision of Regulations Governing Graduate Study at the University of Pittsburgh There are only a few copies of this document remaining and we will need to reorder. Please come with any suggestions you might have for changes which should be made. These may be unclear sections, or areas which are missing. If you have instituted a new requirement in your school which you think would be suitable as a University-wide regulation, please come prepared to discuss this. We will assign the job of drafting any changes to the Graduate Procedures Committee. This discussion should identify issues or regulations which need strengthening. Are there any changes necessary because of the change in technology?

IV. Bulletins on the Web
I attach the procedures we have adopted for updating bulletins on the web. Any comments are welcome.

V. Evaluation of the Academic Programs Offered by the Department of History
The report of the Subcommittee on the Evaluation of Academic programs (see attached) will be presented by Ed Sussna, the liaison to the review. Dr. Ted Muller, chair of the department, and Fred Whelan, chair of the Internal Review Committee will attend the meeting at 4:00 PM, to answer any questions concerning the report.
