AGENDA

I. Approval of Minutes

II. Role of UCGS

Elizabeth Baranger will briefly discuss the role of UCGS in the governance of graduate studies at the University of Pittsburgh.  Council members might be interested in looking at the home page of UCGS: http://www.pitt.edu/~graduate/ucgs.html

III. Activities of Council in 1998-99

Elizabeth Baranger will discuss the activities of UCGS during 1998-99 and those activities which will continue in 1999-00.  Attached is the newly issued Elements of Good Academic Advising and the letter we sent to Deans this summer and the revised Guidelines for Conducting Evaluations of Academic Programs.

IV. Proposal to Transfer Child Devleopment and Child Care

The School of Social Work and the School of Education have submitted a proposal to move the Childe Development and Child Care Program from Social Work to Education.  Both undergraduate and graduate degree programs will be moved, but there will initially be no change in the academic content of the programs.  Dr. Lou Pingel and Mike Patchner will present the proposal and answer any questions members of UCGS may have..

V. Future Activities of UCGS for 1999-00

We will discuss some issues which might be future agenda items.  The development of a combined graduate bulletin may lead to changes in regulations.  The University’s preparation of a self-study for the decennial accreditation by Middle States may also lead to activities.  In addition there are issues raised in the past (the position of postdoctoral fellows and the review of off-campus programs) which will take attention.  Any ideas members have about initiatives UCGS should explore or problems which need to be solved should be brought for discussion.
