I. Approval of Minutes
I attach a copy of the minutes of our last meeting.
II. Review of a Proposal for a Certificate in Clinical Cardiovascular
Engineering
The proposal, submitted by Jerome Schultz, Director
of the Graduate Program in bioengineering, Harvey Borovetz, Director
of the Cardiovascular Training Program, Gerald Holder, Dean of Engineering
and George Michalopoulos, Dean of the School of Medicine, is attached.
The graduate certificate will require an ethics course and clinical
internships in addition to the requirements of the M.S. in Bioengineering.
Associate Dean Larry Shuman and Director Jerome Schultz will attend the
meeting to answer questions.
III. Review of Annual Report of Murtha Center
When UCGS
approved
the creation of the John P. Murtha Center for Continuing Education and
Professional Development at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, it
required that the Center present to UCGS an Annual Report. I attach their
report of fall 1995, and our response.
IV. Distance Education
I attach the recent report of the
Distance Education Task Force and the Distance Learning Draft Policy
Statement and Guidelines just issued by the Commission on Higher Education
of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, which is our
regional accrediting body. Two years ago UCGS formed an ad hoc Committee
on Distance Education which reviewed the status of distance education on
this campus and expressed some concerns and recommendations. It is now
two years later. What is our reaction to these new documents and do we
want to revisit the issue?
V. Issues for 1996-97
What issues should be tackled by the
Student Affairs committee and the Graduate Procedures Committee?
VI. Reviews of New Programs
I attach the guidelines for the
review
of recently approved programs which UCGS adopted, but which were not
carried our. Are they too complicated? I would like advice on how to
proceed.
