AGENDA

I. Approval of Minutes

The minutes of the last meeting of UCGS are attached for your review.

II. Elimination of Programs in the School of Education

I attach a proposal submitted by the School of Education to eliminate some graduate programs in that school. This has resulted as part of the planning process. UCGS is asked to review the proposals particularly to examine if students currently in the program are being fairly treated. The proposal will be presented by Associate Dean Louis Pingel.

III. Honors Designations for Students in the L.L.M. Program

University Honors are awarded to undergraduate and first professional students upon graduation. They are not awarded to students in graduate programs. The L.L.M. program which is considered to be a graduate program has requested that students in its program be permitted to receive honors. Attached is the request from the dean and others. This issue was discussed at the last meeting of the Graduate Procedures Committee, who reaffirmed the policy that students getting graduate degrees should not be awarded University honors, since grade point average is not an appropriate way to designate distinction. They request the program to explain why letter grades are not used in this program.

IV. Master of Studies in Law

I attach a proposal for the introduction of a Master of Studies in Law in the School of Law. This degree will provide matriculants with an opportunity to learn about the law and the legal process in general and to concentrate their studies in an area of law relevant to their particular professional interests. Representatives from the law School will attend. cc: David Herring Alan Meisel Ron Brand
