I. Approval of Minutes
I attach the minutes of the meeting of February 15, 2000.
II. English Proficiency Requirement for Admitted Graduate Students
I sent you the letter from Geoff Wood correcting the data he presented
at our last meeting and the letter to deans asking if their schools would
support a change in the regulations so that a score of 550 is required.
(See my letter for details. A reply was requested by April 6.)
We will briefly discuss where we are in examining this issue.
III. Proposed New Certificate Programs in the School of Law
I attach a proposal for three new certificate programs in the School of Law. These are in Environmental Law, Science, and Policy; International and Comparative Law; and Civil Litigation, respectively and are all very similar to the recently approved certificate in Health Law. As in that program, the students concentrate their electives in a particular area of the law in order to earn the certificate. Dean David Herring will attend the meeting to respond to questions.
IV. Report by the Graduate and Professional Student Association
Each year we ask that a representative of the GPSA report to UCGS on its activities during the current year, plans for the future, and graduate student needs it has identified. The president of GPSA, John Stephens, who is also a member of UCGS, will present this report.
V. Report on Electronic Dissertations
Kit Ayars, Assistant to the Provost, will report on what she learned at The Third International Symposium on Electronic Theses and Dissertations, sponsored by the University of South Florida and the Council of Graduate Schools.
VI. On-Line Application Process
We will give Council an up-date of the status of negotiations with
various providers of services.
