II. Review Proposal to Establish a Doctoral Program in Immunology and
to Change the Names of Four Doctoral Programs in the School of Medicine
The School of Medicine's proposals to establish a doctoral program in
Immunology and to change the names of four of its doctoral programs are
intertwined and were submitted together to the Graduate Procedures
Committee.
Ian Reynolds noted that the school's structure was overhauled several years ago; the emphasis is now on graduate students working in programs rather than in departments. The proposed changes are part of this overhaul.
A discussion of the implementation of these programs followed, with questions concerning continuation of the financial support of students, practical implications of admission of students into central pool before knowing how many will choose any particular program, ratio of international to domestic students, and need for a masters degree program as a safety net for students who do not complete doctoral work for various reasons.
Lou Pingel moved for approval of the School of Medicine proposals, with an
explicit call for review in five years of the Immunology Program and how
the new structure impacts the various graduate programs. A full proposal
in Cell Biology is still needed before approval of that name change. MS
and PhD degree names should be changed as follows:
The motion passed unanimously.
