My primary aims as a teacher are to help students learn to think critically and to write clearly and persuasively. Substantively, my courses teach students how to analyze normative issues in politics by introducing them to the critical tools and traditions of political theory. I always try to integrate classical texts with contemporary issues and problems so that students can see the practical relevance of what we’re studying.
My classes are demanding: we don't shy away from difficult texts, and the level of the lectures and assignments is sophisticated. I pitch the material at a high level, challenging students to stretch their intellectual abilities to the fullest. At the same time, I try to maintain a relaxed classroom atmosphere that encourages questioning and curiosity, and we read a variety of contemporary and popular texts to help keep things real. I also offer extensive support so that all students have the chance to perform at their best.
