Project to produce and test modern mathematics textbooks and conduct teacher training activities in ten English-speaking African countries - Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ghana, Nigeria, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Ethiopia, and Malawi. The Education Development Center (EDC) will implement the project. The project will conduct an 8-week workshop in Mombasa, Kenya, for 60 U.S. consultants and host country representatives to produce texts, teachers' guides, and tests for primary and secondary schools. EDC will publish and distribute the texts for experimental testing in an average of 30 classes and/or teacher training institutes in each country. A maximum of 140 elementary and secondary school teachers will be trained to use the materials in classroom instruction. Students who have completed modern mathematics courses will be tested in order to assess the effectiveness of the materials. When necessary, EDC will also provide consultation to host governments on planning wide-scale adoption or adaptation of the modern mathematics curricula developed by the project.
