5. China attracts more students from overseas http://www.chinanews.com/news/9604/19/041912aa.eng Beijing, April 19 (CNS) -- According to statistics compiled by the State Education Commission, close to 37,000 overseas students were studying in China in 1995 as against 12,000 in 1991. Last year the State Education Commission, in cooperation with foreign countries, offered scholarships to students from 147 foreign territories as a result of which 4,097 foreign students benefited from the Chinese Government's scholarship scheme. Undergraduates made up 40 per cent of this number while 18 per cent were undertaking a second degree , 4 per cent studying for a doctorate and 38 per cent pursuing other electives. Even more other students came to China, without the aid of these scholarships, either on an individual basis, or on inter-college and regional exchanges. 1995 saw an intake of 32,758 foreign students in 283 Chinese tertiary institutions. This was 49 per cent higher than the year before and almost four times that of 1991. Over recent years, overseas students enrolled at universities in China have been admitted to their facilities based upon criteria laid down by those particular institutions. A side-effect of this has been that the numbers enrolled have far exceeded those prescribed by the Central Government. To cope with this situation, the State Education Commission has asked colleges and universities to adopt standard admission procedures by evaluating the academic suitability and Chinese language ability of applicants bearing in mind that quality must take precedence over quantity. --end item CNS 0419-12
