Beijing Catholic diocese opens first mountainous school http://www.chinanews.com/news/9604/29/042910aa.eng Beijing, April 29 (CNS) -- A mountainous school run by a priest and two nuns is formally set up in a village in the remote suburb of Beijing. It is the first learning academy opened by the Beijing Catholic diocese in the municipality. The small village situated at a remote mountainous area in Mentougou District of Beijing is the oldest Catholic parish in the municipality. A church which was built inside the village dated back to 1334 A. D.. About 99 per cent of 250 villagers are Catholics. Old residents had few opportunities to receive education mainly due to geographic remoteness. The nearest bookstore is close to 7.5 kilometres away from the village. The establishment of the school aims at providing the residents with a cultural centre while at the same time representing some contributions made by the Beijing diocese to the village. The spending of 100,000 yuan needed for the setting up of the school was raised by the religious group. The school has a collection of 1,800 books and is equipped with a computer. The school provides library service and is scheduled to open literacy classes and training courses relating to various kinds of practical skills. Summer and Winter holiday courses will be held for the village's children. Two nuns have arrived at the school to make preparations for the opening of the courses. --end item CNS 0429-10
