WUS in Sarajevo

For the implementation of the program "Academic Lifeline for Bosnia and 
Herzegovina", a WUS office serving also as an Information and Councelling 
Centre was established in Sarajevo in October 1994 with the assistance of 
the European Union.  Among the projects implemented are the "Teaching 
Support Program" for professors and assistants at the Universities of 
Sarajevo, Tuzla and Mostar (East), implemented with the assistance of the 
European Union, Austria and the Netherlands. The Austrian and Dutch 
governments have provided funds for a scholarship program for students in 
Bosnia and Herzegovina, called "Ideas for Action", which assists about 
500 students in Sarajevo, Tuzla and Mostar, who have participated in a 
competition for the best projects in favour of their faculties, student 
or other organizations. About 250 students and teachers, who have been 
particularly affected by the war, are supported by Austrian, Dutch and EU 
funds as well as private sponsors in Sarajevo, Tuzla and Mostar. For its 
activities in support to the higher education in Bosnia and Herzegovina, 
WUS Austria has received awards by the University of Sarajevo and the 
Bruno-Kreisky-Foundation for Human Rights in Vienna. In all its 
activities, WUS Austria co-operates with various other international 
organizations, like UNHCR and UNESCO as well as NGOs, as in particular 
the Association of European Universities (CRE), Open Society Institute 
(Soros Foundations), Youth Support Former Yugoslavia (YSY), Fellowship of 
Reconciliation (FOR), SVEZA, Pro Humanitate, Dialogue (DIA) etc.

Universities, faculties, institutions and individuals who would like to 
participate in the activities of WUS Austria are welcome.
