Windows 95 Setup at Pitt
Steps in configuring Windows 95 for a University of Pittsburgh PPP
Connection
- If you're going to use an external modem, make sure your computer's
COM port is fast enough. If an internal modem, 14,400 would be the
minimum speed you should consider.
- If you're using an external modem, open a DOS prompt and run
MSD. After the warning (if you started it from Windows), get to the main
screen and press C to get to the COM port section. If there isn't
a port with 16550 in its number, then you might need to use an internal
modem.
- Type Exit to return to Windows 95
- If you just installed it, have Windows find the modem
- Get into the Control Panel
- Double click the Add New Hardware icon.
- Follow the Next prompts for Windows to detect and configure
itself for your modem.
- Make sure dial-up networking is installed.
- Get into Control Panel
- Double-click the Network icon.
- Check if "Dial-Up Adapter" and protocol "TCP/IP" are available in the
top window.
- If not, click on the "Add" button, and find "Dial-Up Adapter" under
the "adapters" item, and find TCP/IP under the "Protocol"
icon. Each is found under the "Microsoft" brand. Double-click or click
the Add button as needed.
- After adding TCP/IP, certain numbers must be added as follows
(highlight the TCP/IP protocol and hit the "properties" button.
- In the TCP/IP Properties screen, click on the tab marked DNS
Configuration
- Click Enable DNS
- Type 136.142.57.10 as the Host number. Type pitt.edu
as the Domain. In the box labeled DNS Server Search Order, enter
the 3 following numbers, in this order, and click on Add
for each one: 136.142.57.10 then 136.142.188.73 then
136.142.188.76
- In the Domain Suffix Search Order box, enter pitt.edu
and click Add. Then click cis.pitt.edu and click
Add.
- Create a Dial-up connection
- Open "My Computer"
- Double-click on "Dial-Up Networking"
- Double-click on "Make New Connection"
- Name it "Connect to Pitt" and click next
- Enter the University's phone number 621-5954 (country code and area
code might be necessary).
- Click on the finish button to finish creating the new connection.
- Then go back to the "Dial-Up Networking" Window and right click on
your new connection, probably named "Connect to Pitt."
- Click on the Properties option.
- Close to the bottom of this screen, click once on a button marked
"Configure."
- Click the options tab.
- Click on Bring up terminal window after dialing.
- Click OK.
- Back at your Connect to Pitt window, click on server type.
- Beneath the Type of Dial-Up Server line near the top, click on
the drop-down list and click on PPP: Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5,
Internet. Click OK to all boxes until done.
- Ready to try:
- In the Dial-Up Networking window, click on the Connect
to Pitt button.
- Enter your user name and password if prompted.
- Click Connect.
- When the small Connecting box disappears and a Terminal Screen
appears, type in your user name and password. Note: Press ENTER after
each one.
- Type the 3 letters PPP and then press ENTER.
- Press the F7 key.
- You should be connected if everything went well.
- To begin a session of FTP, e-mail, Netscape, etc., simply minimize
the windows and start up the program you wish to use. Note: Don't click
on cancel buttons, simply minimize the network applications and
find the FTP, e-mail or Netscape icon.
