The resolution was passed unanimously by Senate Council on March 4, 2009.

Whereas, the World Health Organization encourages all women to breast feed their children until a least the age of two because it reduces the risk of childhood diseases;

Whereas, mothers going back on the job after a few months’ maternity leave often stop breast feeding because of a lack of space, privacy and support for nursing or pumping breast milk; and

Whereas, provision of an appropriate location for breast pumping for faculty, staff and students, could help address this need, and would benefit the University through improved health of its families.

Resolved, that Senate Council encourages all units of the University to identify private space, if needed, within existing facilities for mothers who wish to express breast milk.
