VERY ROUGH DRAFT
Report Writing
Subcommittee-Spring 2004 Senate Plenary
Minutes for March 1,
2004 meeting
Attending: Lisa Brush, Jean Ferguson Carr, Kathryn
Flannery (chair), Irene Hanson Frieze, Randi Koeske, Scott Kiesling, Jennifer
Stephan, and Amy Wagner.
Discussion of the Purpose of the Plenary Report . Kathryn raised the question of what the
purpose of our report is, what we want to accomplish with the report, and what
its intended audience is. We all agreed
that these were very important questions.
The consensus was that
- We do
want to be able to make some positive changes for women at Pitt.
- Many
things have been accomplished over the years, and we need to highlight
these in the report. [Jean Carr is
preparing a history of women at Pitt, based on her review of archival
documents. Some brief form of this
will probably be included in the materials available on April 7 and for
workshop participants. The longer
version will be posted on the website].
- Before
making formal recommendations, we need to collect more data on what the
current practices are in various units now and what is being done in other
schools.
- We
want to make sure that discussions at the workshops can help us in
thinking about the recommendations.
We should prepare some information about the plenary and formally
ask workshop participants to think about what things are going well in
terms of the particular focus of the workshop, and where there are
problems. This information needs to
be formally collected from workshop leaders and participants.
Conclusions about the report.
- We are
not yet ready to formulate formal recommendations. The draft of the recommendations now on
the website should be taken down.
- The
activities of the Plenary Planning Committee should continue into
2004-2005. This would include
continuing to work on the development of the recommendations through
discussion, information gathering, and additional workshops.
- We
need some paid help in gathering the information we need to make
well-grounded, thoughtful recommendations.
We need to explore how we might get such assistance.
- We
need to think more about how to organize the report.
