ANNUAL REPORT, January 15, 1999

Susan Wyngaard, GLIRT Moderator

Leadership Update
At the 1999 Annual Conference of ARLIS/NA Susan Wyngaard will conclude her term as moderator  of GLIRT, and Tom Young will assume this role for the new year.  At the annual business meeting, scheduled for March 28, 1999 a new in-coming round table moderator  (to take office at the 2000 conference) will be elected.  At this same meeting  we will decide if Mary Galvin will continue as "Update" column editor, or if that role will pass to another GLIRT member, and whether or not Susan Wyngaard will continue as GLIRT list serve manager.

Narrative
Several  major activities have been undertaken this past year.  The first has been planning the GLIRT program, cosponsored by the Diversity Committee,  for the 1999 Vancouver conference:  When Finally Aroused: Continuing Censorship Cases in Canada and the United States.  Ray Anne
Lockard,  program moderator, has been the force behind this session and has been responsible for enlisting speakers, planning topics, and working with the conference committee on specific details.  We are hopeful that this session on censorship issues will appeal to a broad cross section of ARLIS/NA membership since it deals with a topic so relevant  to the heart of librarianship.

The second  activity,  currently underway,  is the creation of a list serve for GLIRT.  Susan Wyngaard, Moderator of GLIRT, has  worked  with the systems office at Ohio State University to establish and support the list serve.   Creation of a discussion list  for the purpose of improving
communication and enhancing the flow of ideas  has been a long-time goal of GLIRT, and we are now very close to achieving this (we expect to be operational by January 22, 1999).

GLIRT is also involved in the creation of a special "queer issue" of ART DOC, under the guidance of guest editor Ray Anne Lockard, on gay and lesbian issues related to art and visual resource librarianship .  Articles by artists, curators, archivists, librarians and others are planned. Deadline for submission of all articles is June, 1999 for issuance as the Fall, 1999 ART DOC.

GLIRT has joined with the CAA Gay and Lesbian Caucus to sponsor a joint ARLIS/CAA session at the 1999 CAA conference in Los Angeles.  Co-moderated by Ray Anne Lockard and Al Willis, the session will focus on the newly created One Institute at USC, which consists of three archives serving as a major source for lesbian, gay and bisexual research.  Speakers will include those who have used in archives in art research.

ARLIS/NA Strategic Plan
Action Item 35: GLIRT has joined with the Diversity Committee to present "When Finally Aroused: Continuing Censorship Cases in Canada and the United States" as a program at the 1999 annual conference in Vancouver.

Action Item 38: Ray Anne Lockard maintains the GLIRT web site, including the bibliographies provided.

Action Item 40: This item will be examined at the 1999 GLIRT Business Meeting with action recommendations forthcoming.

Action Item 46: This item will be examined at the 1999 GLIRT Business Meeting with action recommendations forthcoming.

Issues for the Executive Board
None at this time, although there may be some issues referred to the Executive Board after the GLIRT annual conference Business Meeting.
