Progress Report, June 1998
Submitted by:
Susan Wyngaard, GLIRT Moderator

1.  Leadership update:
Moderator: Susan Wyngaard
Incoming Moderator: Tom Young

2.  Narrative of Activities:

A.   GLIRT, the Diversity Committee, and the Academic Libraries Division have submitted a  joint conference program proposal to the 1999 conference committee.  A two hour panel discussion planned by Ray Anne Lockard and entitled, "When Finally Aroused: Continuing Censorship Cases in Canada and the U.S." would consist of five speakers: a performance artist whose work has been censored; a Canadian bookstore owner who has sued Canadian customs regarding censorship of art books shipped to her store; a publisher from San Francisco who has had her books banned in Canada; an attorney who can address censorship of books by artists Jock Sturgis, David Hamilton, and Sally Mann; and an art librarian who collects "controversial" materials. This would be a continuation of the very successful session held at the 1995 conference in Montreal.
B.  A request for a time slot for a GLIRT Business Meeting at the 1999 conference has been submitted to Cheryl Siegel.

C.  GLIRT is joining with the CAA Gay and Lesbian Caucus to sponsor a joint ARLIS/CAA session at the 1999 CAA conference in Los Angeles. Co-moderated by Ray Anne Lockard and Al Willis, the session will focus on the newly created One Institute at USC, which consists of three archives serving as a major source for lesbian, gay, and bisexual research. Hoped-for speakers include an art historian and an artist who have used the archives in their research, the Executive Director of the Institute, and a faculty member from USC who was instrumental in establishing the archives. Plans for this session have not been finalized.

D.  Work in progress: Ray Anne Lockard is currently working on updating the GLIRT homepage.
3.  ARLIS/NA Strategic Plan
Action Item 35: GLIRT has joined with the Diversity Committee and the academic Libraries Division in cooperatively submitting the 1999 ARLIS/NA conference proposal described in 2A (above).  Regarding email distribution lists, see "4. Issues for the Executive Board" (below).

Action Item 38: Ray Anne Lockard maintains the GLIRT web site and is in the process of updating it, including the bibliographies provided.

Action Item 40: This item will be examined at the 1999 GLIRT Business Meeting with action recommendations forthcoming.

Action Item 46: This item will be examined at the 1999 GLIRT Business Meeting with action recommendations forthcoming.

4.  Issues for the Executive Board
Question: Is it possible for groups within ARLIS/NA, such as GLIRT, to mount their own email listserves on the headquarters' computer?  In the past, when I was chair of the Travel Awards Committee, I created an email listserve for that committee on my institution's equipment.  This list
greatly facilitated group discussion, enabled us to conduct much more business than in previous years, increased efficiency, and allowed everyone on the committee to have easy access to informal exchange.  The problem, however, is that locally mounted listserves have to be recreated each time the office of moderator turns over (ie, it would not have been a good idea to keep the listserve located on the OSU computer when I no longer served on the committee).  Is it possible for ARLIS/NA headquarters to establish listserves for interested committees, divisions, round tables, chapters, etc. within ARLIS/NA and maintain them centrally?  If not, I will once again set up a GLIRT listserve at OSU, but since my term of service is half over I hesitate to set this up only to dismantle it in six months.

Respectfully submitted,

Susan Wyngaard, Moderator
